S100 - Carmarthenshire
A wonderful example of an S100 restored by Darren McKenna. Darren tells the story:
This was my second jukebox restoration, and although I thought I knew what to expect, this one turned out to be quite a challenge! When I bought it from a seller in Devon, it was really only good for parts. I had very little history on the machine, so I decided to take it right back to basics and start from scratch.
It’s been completely rewired — effectively rebuilt as a working copy of the AMI H model, since the original S100 wiring system was impossible to decipher. The project included:
- Full rewire and new power source
- Strengthening the front timber frame (it was badly broken)
- New transfer motor and speakers
- Replacement basket parts and rebuilt amplifier
- Rechromed and resprayed trims
- New cabinet covering
- Deep scratch removal on the screen
Interestingly, the machine already had SCAN ONE and CAM ONE replacements when I got it. Judging by the old record labels inside, it looks like this jukebox was still in use into the late 1980s or early 1990s — it’s definitely had a long working life!
I owe a big thanks to Terry Lovell, Robin Colville, Bob Harper, and everyone on the BAL AMi Facebook page. Their help and advice were invaluable. Bob also rebuilt the amplifier and supplied a new power source — it now sounds absolutely fantastic.
Today, the jukebox takes pride of place at home. It brings back great memories for my father and father-in-law, and my grandson loves dropping in a shilling to play a tune. It’s lovely to see it bridging generations — from the early ’60s right through to today.
This restoration has been a huge learning experience and a rewarding way to make new friends and connections in the jukebox community.
